London Fire Brigade gets green light for redevelopment plans

Plans to turn the London Fire Brigade’s headquarters into housing, a museum and office space have been approved.

Last month, Lambeth Council’s Planning Applications Committee voted in favour of U+I and the London Fire Brigade’s proposals for the redevelopment of 8 Albert Embankment.

The 8 Albert Embankment scheme, designed by architect Pilbrow & Partners, will deliver a new mixed-use community that offers significant benefits to the local community.

The transformed site will provide a new fire station for Lambeth, with modern facilities for firefighters, and a new permanent home for the London Fire Brigade Museum.

Proposals also include 443 new homes, 40% of which will be affordable; 1,264 jobs across 100,000 sq ft of new workspace and new public spaces across the site. The iconic Grade II listed former London Fire Brigade HQ will also be restored to house a new fire station, museum, rooftop restaurant and hotel.

Deputy Commissioner Andy Roe at the London Fire Brigade, said: ‘We are pleased that Lambeth Council’s planning application committee has given the go-ahead for these plans. These proposals will ensure we can continue to keep Lambeth residents safe long into the future with a refurbishment of Lambeth Fire Station, one of the busiest in London.

‘Also included is a long-awaited permanent home for our museum to deliver its fire safety education work and wealth of exciting, educational family activities. We look forward to welcoming visitors to the fire station and museum in the near future.’
