Devon properties set to show off impressive eco-upgrades

With just over a week to go, an Eco Homes Weekend event is due to showcase how homeowners in Totnes and Darington have successfully generated renewable energy.

Created by Transition Town Totnes, a charity that is helping the community reduce its environmental impact through schemes to increase low impact affordable housing, the Open Eco Homes showcase is set to take place from 14th-15th October.

Plans on how to improve the built environment have plagued the housing sector for years and since the cost-of-living crisis hit, people have struggled to sustainably upgrade their homes. However, with almost 40% of global carbon dioxide emissions coming from real estate, Transition Town Totnes are using real-world examples of how homes can be sufficiently upgraded to help improve the environment.

The charity said: ‘It’s a unique opportunity to explore real-life examples that showcase the best in sustainable living and eco-friendly homes right here on your doorstep.’

Due to include 21 properties over the course of the two days, the eco-homes event will display sustainable features from natural building techniques to hi-tech airtightness and heat pumps. In addition, the event will also include demonstrations of the ways in which people can sustainably improve their homes, with half of the projects being renovated existing houses – demonstrating examples of how to install insulation, a heat pump, solar panels, and battery systems.

Alongside this, there will also be opportunities to meet homeowners who have integrated eco-friendly solutions into their daily lives, as well as scheduled talks and Q&A sessions to hear more details on the build process and the rationale behind materials used and features installed.

In order to participate in the event, people can download the details from the Transition Town Totness website where they’ll see individual events listed with timings and directions on how to get there.
