Former Horlicks factory to be transformed into 1,300 new homes

The former Horlicks factory in Slough has received planning permission for a resident-led, mixed-use development.

Working in partnership with the developer Berkely Homes and the landscape architect Bradley Murphy Design, the scheme will deliver 1,300 new homes, 25% of which will be affordable.

The factory is located in the heart of slow, just 20 miles west of central London.

The design will connect with nature by creating open gardens and green streets for the community.

The central neighbourhood gardens will provide a variety of space for community, leisure and play.

The clocktower and chimney from the former factory have been retained and will be used to create a new public square for community activity while also maintaining some historical context.

Caroline McHardy, land director at Berkeley Homes commented: ‘Berkeley is passionate about creating fantastic communities where people aspire to live.

‘Our focus is on placemaking, not just householding.

‘We have a proven track record in creating new communities across Berkshire, we are therefore delighted to have this opportunity to transform such an iconic building with years of heritage into a vibrant new community.’

Josie Wragg, chief executive of Slough Borough Council said: ‘The Horlicks development is a key site in the regeneration of the whole town centre area and I know that residents were keen to keep the iconic facade so I am delighted this amazing development has been approved.

By working with us, Berkeley has brought forward a development that brings private and social housing — which are very needed in Slough — but also incredible green spaces, biodiversity and community living, we are proud to welcome such a development in the centre of the town.

The regeneration of the town centre area is gathering pace and we are exciting for this development and the future of the whole area.’
