Developers promise 68 new jobs and £32m economic boost as redevelopment of Millendreath Beach Resort moves forward
A major redevelopment of a coastal resort in south Cornwall has secured planning permission, paving the way for a £62 million investment that its backers say will transform the area.
Valley Resorts, advised by global commercial real estate firm Avison Young, has obtained approval for the overhaul of Millendreath Beach Resort. The plans include 182 holiday homes built to building regulations standards, a combined pool and leisure facility with reception area, a restaurant overlooking the sea and tennis courts.
The company estimates the project will create 68 permanent, full-time roles and inject approximately £32 million into the local economy.
Designs for the coastal properties feature natural materials intended to blend with the surrounding landscape and reflect the colours of the coastline. Avison Young’s environmental specialists worked alongside the Environment Agency and JBA to develop a flood defence wall and a channel designed to divert floodwater, protecting both the new development and the wider local area from future flooding.
The scheme also includes upgrades to existing coastal defences, new footpaths, and safer access to the beach. Public amenities will feature a three-storey restaurant and bar operation along the coast, plus a water sports centre.
Beyond economic benefits, the developers highlight ecological gains. The plan promises a 27% increase in habitat areas, a 248% rise in hedgerow coverage, and a 12% expansion of watercourses along this stretch of Cornwall’s south coast.
Andrew Clark, CEO at Valley Resorts, said: ‘Millendreath Beach Resort is the latest of our four holiday house schemes in key coastal tourism areas in Cornwall set to be transformed through thoughtful, sustainable development and high-quality design. We’re passionate about preserving Cornwall’s character and coastline, and we’ve worked closely with Cornwall Council and Avison Young through a period of community consultation to ensure that any redevelopment only benefits the location. This project will see an investment of approximately £62m into the area, creating new jobs and supporting the local economy.’
Paul Harwood, Director, Planning Consultancy at Avison Young, added: ‘We’re very pleased to have worked with Valley Resorts, Cornwall Council and third-party specialists to secure planning permission for the landmark redevelopment of Millendreath Beach Resort. Upon completion, this will be a flagship development on Cornwall’s south coast, adding new, non-seasonal jobs to the area and contributing strongly to the local economy. It’s been fantastic to collaborate with our environmental specialists too, ensuring that the proposed redevelopment mitigates any future flood risk to the area and preserves it for generations to come. We’re very much looking forward to seeing the scheme now progress.’
